COMMUNITY GARDEN WORK PARTY IN CALAHAN PARK!

COMMUNITY GARDEN WORK PARTY IN CALAHAN PARK!
Come out and support local food production in public spaces!  The Calahan Park Community Garden Organizing Committee and Burlington Area Community Gardens (BACG) invite you to participate in a work day to establish a garden on the slope above the tennis courts on October 10, 2010.   We’ve been working on this garden idea for almost a year, it’s been approved by the Parks Commission, and we’re ready to roll up our sleeves and make a garden.
This garden represents the efforts of park neighbors to promote local food and community gardening.  The garden will be part of Burlington Area Community Gardens, a city program administered through the Department of Parks and Recreation.  It will add 32 new plots to the 360 plots in available in Burlington, and fill a long-standing need for more gardening space in the South End.   It will provide opportunities for community involvement, diversify uses of the park, and because it is located along a major entrance road to the city, it will stand visible as a model of Burlington’s commitment to sustainability and neighborhood participation.
On October 10th, we will be participating in the climate change organization 350.org’s Global Work Party, joining 2,500 groups in over 150 countries in doing local projects  In the words of Bill McKibben, the organization’s founder, the goal of the day is not to solve the climate crisis one project at a time, but to send a message to our political leaders: “if we can get to work, you can get to work too--on the legislation and the treaties that will make all our work easier in the long run.”
